Clothing for protection against heat and flame — Determination of heat transmission on exposure to both flame and radiant heat
This test method measures thermal energy transfer through flame resistant materials for clothing subjected to a combined convective and radiant heat exposure. The test apparatus exposes the test specimen to a combined direct flame convective and high intensity radiant exposure condition. Key metrics include the Thermal Protection Index (TPI), which predicts burn injury risk, and the Heat Transfer Index (HTI), which measures insulation based on temperature rise, with the test simulating realistic fire conditions using a balanced mix of radiant and convective heat at 84 kW/m².
